The Deputy Health Minister and MP for Essikadu-Ketan, Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah, on Thursday, June 25, 2026, attended a landmark event that signals a new chapter in Ghana’s healthcare landscape: the first-ever matriculation of specialist nurses at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

This ceremony marks a significant milestone as Ghana introduces specialized nursing education in critical fields that are pivotal to the nation’s health system.

The pioneering cohort of specialist nurses has been trained in six key disciplines: Critical Care, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Emergency Nursing, and Oncology.

These specialties reflect a strategic response to the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Ghana, which currently account for 43% of all deaths nationwide.

The advanced expertise of these nurses will enhance early detection, improve treatment protocols, and ultimately save lives at the healthcare frontline.

During the event, Dr Danquah underscored the interconnectedness of government initiatives such as the Mahama Cares program and the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) scheme, explaining how these policies align to strengthen overall healthcare delivery.

By empowering these specialists, the government aims to elevate patient outcomes and bolster the resilience of Ghana’s health system, ensuring that care is both accessible and of high quality.

To the first group of matriculated specialist nurses, Dr Danquah extended a message of encouragement and pride.

Their knowledge, dedication, and compassion are set to transform patient care and establish a solid foundation for generations to come.

This initiative signals not just an investment in skills but a renewed commitment to health sector excellence.

Looking forward, the Ghanaian government, through the Ministry of Health, reaffirms its commitment to expanding specialist training programs, upgrading healthcare infrastructure, and enhancing the working conditions for all health professionals.

This matriculation ceremony symbolizes the beginning of a crucial journey toward healthcare transformation, placing Ghana confidently on the path to better health for all its citizens.
