The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, today, Tuesday, August 4, joined the Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, Hon. Fiifi Buckman, and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Abdul Majeed Dokurugu Nassam, to distribute 20,000 live birds to 400 beneficiaries in the municipality under the government's flagship Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme.
The distribution exercise, held in Kwesimintsim, forms part of the nationwide rollout of the initiative aimed at boosting local poultry production, creating jobs, and strengthening Ghana's food security.
Under the arrangement, each of the 400 selected beneficiaries received 50 birds to start or expand their household poultry operations.
Addressing beneficiaries and stakeholders at the event, Hon. Joseph Nelson described the initiative as more than a mere distribution of chicks.
"This intervention goes beyond the distribution of chicks. It is an investment in people, livelihoods, and Ghana's food security," he said.
The Regional Minister encouraged the beneficiaries to treat the support as a foundation for sustainable enterprise.
"Hon. Joseph Nelson encouraged all beneficiaries to see these birds not as a one-time gift, but as productive assets. With proper care, good management, and commitment, today's distribution can grow into thriving poultry enterprises that improve household incomes and contribute meaningfully to our local economy," he added.
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative, launched in November 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama under the Feed Ghana agenda, is a three-tier poultry development programme targeting large-scale, medium-scale, and household producers.
The programme seeks to empower 55,000 households nationwide, with about 3 million birds procured for the first phase, to cut Ghana's poultry import bill, which exceeds $300 million annually.
The government aims to produce up to 18 million birds by the end of 2026 under the broader National Broiler Project.
MP for Kwesimintsim, Hon. Fiifi Buckman, and MCE Hon. Abdul Majeed Dokurugu Nassam both pledged their commitment to monitor the beneficiaries to ensure the birds are properly nurtured and that the intended impact is realized in the municipality.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the government and assured that they would put the birds to good use to improve their livelihoods.
The event was attended by municipal directors, party executives, assembly members, and community members.
