General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has admitted that some government appointees may have lost touch with the party’s grassroots after securing appointments. He acknowledged that while some officials are genuinely overwhelmed by the demands of their jobs, others may no longer maintain the same level of connection with party supporters who helped bring the NDC to power.
“There are also, from what I get, from the sense that I get, is that there are also instances where some of the appointees have lost their way,” Fifi Kwetey said on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
He was responding to concerns that some NDC activists who campaigned for the party have struggled to access government officials they previously worked closely with.
Mr Kwetey said the problem was partly due to the different backgrounds of government appointees, noting that not everyone appointed to government comes from the party’s grassroots.
“You can’t expect that all the appointees have that level of connection, I mean, to the grassroots,” he said.
“Not every appointee is necessarily a party grassroots person. I mean, there are some people who are really technical people who are plugged and placed in those places,” he added.
Mr Kwetey said the party must find ways to ensure that such concerns are addressed, while supporters must also make better use of the party’s structures.
He explained that the NDC has structures from the branch level through the constituency and regional levels to the national leadership, and supporters should not always seek direct access to the top.
“You don’t want to encourage that. So you must also absorb those structures,” he said.
According to him, relying on the party’s structures would prevent a situation where a few senior officials become overwhelmed by requests from supporters across the country.
“Imagine, for example, the president has to wake up every morning, every branch member wants to assess the president because they are looking for an answer. Clearly, the president can’t get any job done,” he said.
Mr Kwetey, however, maintained that party officials and government appointees still have a responsibility to remain accessible to supporters and help resolve legitimate concerns.
He said the NDC must strike a balance between ensuring that appointees are able to perform their official duties and maintaining their connection with the people who supported the party.
