Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has emphasized the need for institutional continuity in safeguarding Ghana's maritime domain as the Western Naval Command held a Change of Command Parade in Sekondi.
At the ceremony, the Command honoured outgoing Flag Officer Commanding, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, for his distinguished stewardship and welcomed Commodore Stephen Nyam as the new Flag Officer Commanding.
According to the Minister, the transition reinforces discipline and operational readiness at a command that occupies a strategically critical position in the country.
"The Western Naval Command occupies a strategically critical position, safeguarding our coastline, fishing communities, ports, offshore oil and gas infrastructure and other resources that underpin Ghana's blue economy,"
Mr. Nelson stated. "Its work is therefore not merely about securing our waters; it is about protecting livelihoods, investment, trade and national prosperity."
In a second major engagement at the same event, Mr. Nelson flagged off GNS ACHIMOTA for the 4th Edition of Operation ANOUANZE, a multinational maritime security operation.
The operation involves the navies of Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia within the Zone F maritime domain of the Gulf of Guinea.
The Minister noted that at a time when piracy, sea robbery, trafficking and other illicit activities continue to threaten the Gulf of Guinea, regional cooperation is essential.
"Ghana's participation demonstrates our country's growing leadership and commitment to collective maritime security.
By putting our naval capability at the service of regional cooperation, we are helping to keep the Gulf of Guinea safe for legitimate economic activity and ensuring that the blue economy can thrive," he said.
He commended the men and women of the Ghana Navy, describing their vigilance at sea as a direct investment in Ghana's peace, security and prosperity.
"Command may change. The mission endures," Mr. Nelson added.
