In Politics, We Must Learn To Disagree Without Being Degrading – NDC Western Region Dep Comms Officer Hopeful Nat Andoh

A hopeful candidate for Deputy Western Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nat Andoh, has called on political actors to embrace decent and issue-based discourse, stressing that disagreement in politics must not descend into insults and personal attacks.

In a social media post, Mr. Andoh wrote: “In politics, we must learn to disagree without being degrading."

According to him, Ghana's democratic growth will be undermined if political communication continues to be driven by invective rather than ideas.

Mr. Andoh, who is known within NDC circles for his work on local party communications and youth mobilisation, said the current political climate — both within parties and between parties — requires a deliberate shift towards fact-based engagement.

He noted that while competition is natural in politics, particularly as the NDC prepares for its internal elections ahead of the 2028 general elections, delegates and communicators must model the discipline they demand from opponents.

The NDC Western Region branch has commenced vetting for 54 aspirants contesting various executive positions, with the communications contest emerging as one of the most closely watched.

The incumbent Western Regional Communications Officer, Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, is seeking re-election, pledging to strengthen party communication and grassroots engagement.

Mr. Andoh is among those seeking to deputize the regional communications machinery.

Nat Andoh currently serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly, where he handles media relations and public engagement.

He officially declared his intention to contest for the NDC Western Regional Deputy Communications Officer position in July, outlining plans to strengthen the party’s communication machinery in the Western Region ahead of future elections.

In previous commentaries, he has been described as a hopeful candidate for Deputy Western Regional Communications Officer of the NDC calling for balance between rights and public order.

If elected, he says he will prioritize training for constituency communicators, rapid response to misinformation, and expanding the party's digital presence across the 14 districts in the Western Region. His vision aligns with calls within the region for fact-based public engagement and stronger NDC structures.

In his latest message, Mr. Andoh cautioned party communicators against what he termed "degrading politics":

"We can be firm on issues without being abusive to persons. We can defend our party without destroying another person’s dignity. Once we lose respect in our disagreement, we lose the moral authority to lead."

He urged NDC communicators in particular, as members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), to set the tone for national political discourse by focusing on government projects, policies and verifiable achievements rather than personality attacks.

"Development is not merely about where we want to live; it is also about how we choose to live together," he has previously stated in a call for mutual respect.

Party delegates in the Western Region are expected to elect new regional executives in the coming weeks.
