Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Hon Emelia Arthur Pledges Support for Women in Aquatic Science

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture and Member of Parliament for Shama, Hon. Emelia Arthur, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting women’s participation in Ghana’s fisheries and aquatic resources sector.

This follows an engagement with the Women in Aquatic Science and Management Network (WASMaN) on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The delegation, led by its President, Dr. Alberta Sagoe, introduced the network’s mandate and explored opportunities for collaboration with the Ministry.

WASMaN, according to Dr. Sagoe, is dedicated to strengthening women’s participation in aquatic science and management by connecting practitioners, supporting research and mentorship, and integrating evidence into policy discussions.

Its work cuts across fisheries, aquaculture, freshwater and marine science, coastal management, conservation and development.

She outlined some of the network’s key initiatives, including the Research Spotlight, which offers members a platform to share their research, and WASMaN Knowledge Bites, a one-page knowledge-sharing initiative that highlights issues at the intersection of science and management.

Dr. Sagoe added that the network is developing mentorship and capacity-strengthening programmes and is seeking partnerships and funding to scale up its activities, particularly community engagement.

Hon. Emelia Arthur welcomed the initiative and expressed the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with WASMaN in practical areas to support the development, participation and visibility of women in the sector.

Discussions focused on strengthening partnerships in research, mentorship and capacity development, with a shared objective of ensuring women have greater opportunities to contribute to and shape the future of Ghana’s fisheries and aquatic resources sector.
