The Western Gospel Awards is going international for its 6th edition, with acclaimed South African vocalist Deborah McKay confirmed as the headline special guest from South Africa.
Organizers Prolific GH will stage the ceremony on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at the Western Serene Atlantic Hotel in Ghana, an event expected to attract gospel artistes, music executives, clergy and fans for a night celebrating excellence in gospel music.
The awards scheme has established itself as a platform dedicated to recognizing talents, ministries and creatives helping to advance gospel music, particularly in the Western and Western North regions.
This year, all eyes will be on the South African contingent. Headlining the international spotlight is Deborah McKay, billed to perform live on the night.
McKay is a South African vocalist whose catalogue moves through gospel, Christian music, jazz, soul and Afro-soul. Her team describes her journey as using music to inspire, heal and give people hope, with her music refusing to keep gospel, grief and personal history in separate rooms.
She is no stranger to genre fusion. Her nine-track 2026 album The Elevation blends worship anthems like "Ngingowakho Jesu Wakho" and "uJesu Wasifela" with jazz and Afro-soul textures, while her latest single "I Really Do" is a jazz-and-soul tribute to her late mother that has been trending on South African gospel platforms.
"I Really Do turns grief into a living archive," one South African feature noted, describing how McKay's music has continued moving through gospel, jazz and Afro-soul.
According to her representatives, McKay has also picked up two nominations in Ghana's Western Gospel Awards this year: Western Urban/Contemporary Gospel Artiste of the Year and Best Vocalist – Diaspora — categories where she appears alongside Ghanaian names in the official nominees list.
Her nomination in the Diaspora categories is significant, as the Western Gospel Awards uses the diaspora categories to celebrate Ghanaian and African gospel voices making an impact beyond the Western Region and outside Ghana.
McKay is scheduled to perform live with an orchestra at Durban's Playhouse Company on October 23, 2026, ahead of her Ghana appearance, underscoring her growing international touring schedule.
Performing alongside Deborah McKay are some of the Western Region's finest:
Akesse Brimpong, Yvonne Menz, Nyame Akae Me, Efua Black, Esther Godwyll, Kofi Karikari and S.K. Frimpong.
The mix sets up a powerful Ghana-South Africa worship exchange, from contemporary urban gospel to deep indigenous worship.
Lead Consultant of the Western Gospel Awards, Mr. Maxwell Bills Ghansah, has officially confirmed the date and venue for the 2026 edition.
Organizers say the 6th edition will bring together some of the industry's established voices alongside emerging talents, creating a platform for recognition, networking and celebration.
