The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) is exploring the possibility of relocating its Takoradi campus to portions of the Takoradi Monkey Hill forest reserve.
The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, disclosed this on Monday, August 31, 2026, following a courtesy call by the Governing Council of the university.
The meeting focused on securing a more structured and expansive space to enhance the university's academic and technological mandate.
According to the Regional Minister, the proposed relocation aims to establish a more defined, coordinated, and conducive environment tailored for advanced teaching, academic research, learning, and technological innovation.
Expressing his backing for the initiative, Hon. Joseph Nelson emphasized the critical need to empower educational institutions that train the next generation of tech leaders.
"As the world continues to evolve into a technology-driven one, we must give institutions training the human resource for this future the space and suppott they need to grow," Minister Nelson noted.
While Monkey Hill remains a notable green belt and conservation area within the twin city, the Minister indicated that the Western Regional Coordinating Council approaches the proposal with a balanced perspective.
He described the proposal as a "conversation worth having" and assured stakeholders that authorities will explore all possibilities surrounding the request with an open mind.
The relocation, if finalized, is expected to anchored GCTU's presence in the region and drive local economic growth through digitalization.
"A stronger GCTU presence in a well-planned environment could be another important step in positioning Takoradi and the Western Region for the opportunities of the digital and technological age," the Minister added.
Further discussions and environmental assessments are expected to take place between the university's management, city planners, and regional authorities to determine the feasibility of the project.
