Western Regional Minister Tours Karpowership Ghana, Pledges Stronger Partnership for Community Development

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has toured the facilities of Karpowership Ghana Company Limited to gain first-hand insight into its operations and explore avenues for deeper collaboration between the company, the Western Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and host communities. 

The working visit to the Karpowership facility in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis forms part of the Minister's engagement with strategic industries operating in the region. 

Speaking after the tour, Mr. Nelson described power as fundamental to economic activity, noting that it drives industry, supports businesses, sustains essential services and provides the foundation for investment and job creation.

He said Karpowership’s contribution to Ghana’s power generation mix and its connection to the national grid make its operations strategically important to Ghana’s energy security and stability of power supply.

"With its 470MW installed capacity and 450MW dependable capacity, the facility remains a significant thermal generation asset, while its use of Ghana’s indigenous natural gas reinforces the importance of integrating our domestic energy resources into national development," the Minister stated.

Mr. Nelson commended Karpowership for its role in the national energy sector but stressed that the relationship between the company and the region must go beyond power generation.

"As a Region, we value this contribution and recognise that the relationship must go beyond power generation. We want Karpowership to continue to remain a strong partner in the Western Region and Ghana, with an even greater focus on the communities around its operations," he said.

According to him, there is scope for deeper collaboration in community development, environmental sustainability, local economic participation and other interventions that can create tangible value for people within the operational area.

He assured that the Western Regional Coordinating Council remains open and available to facilitate constructive engagement wherever necessary.

"Our objective is clear: to strengthen partnerships that keep Ghana powered, support productive economic activity and ensure that communities hosting critical national infrastructure also see meaningful benefits from its presence," Mr. Nelson added.

Karpowership Ghana, operators of the 470MW Karadeniz Powership Ayşegül Sultan, is one of Ghana’s major thermal power producers and currently runs on natural gas from Ghana’s offshore fields, a shift lauded by government as a cost-saving and local-content driven move.
