Young cultural talents from across Ghana have gathered in Techiman in the Bono East Region for the 17th National Festival of Arts and Culture for Basic Schools.
The five day festival, organised by the Ghana Education Service (GES) through its Arts and Culture Department, is bringing together pupils from all 16 regions to celebrate Ghana’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
The festival, which runs from Sunday, 9 August to Thursday, 13 August 2026, is being hosted at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Girls’ Senior High School and Techiman Senior High School.
Sixteen cultural troupes, representing each region, are taking part in performances featuring traditional music, dance, drama, poetry, costumes and other forms of artistic expression.
The opening ceremony on Monday, 10 August, brought together education officials, teachers, pupils, traditional authorities, dignitaries and members of the public.
The Bono East Regional Minister was represented by the Municipal Chief Executive for Kintampo North, Isaac Donkor, while the Bono East Regional Director of Education, Rev. Kingsley Gyamina Asante, also attended the ceremony.
The event was chaired by Nana Apinteng Foso Gyabuo II, who joined other stakeholders in celebrating the role of arts and culture in the education and development of young people.
Large numbers of basic school pupils also attended the ceremony, cheering on their colleagues and enjoying the colourful cultural performances.
Beyond the competition, the festival is designed to give young people an opportunity to learn about Ghana’s different traditions while building friendships and a stronger sense of national identity.
Pupils from different parts of the country are able to interact, share their cultural experiences and gain a better appreciation of the traditions and values that connect communities across Ghana.
The Ghana Education Service says activities of this nature form an important part of holistic education by helping pupils develop creativity, confidence, discipline and an appreciation of their cultural identity.
With the festival continuing until Thursday, participants and audiences are expected to witness more performances and artistic displays as the young talents compete while celebrating the cultural richness of Ghana.
