The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, arrived safely in Doha, Qatar today to attend the state funeral of the late former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Khalifa bin Al Thani.

On arrival, Mr. Speaker was received by officials of the Qatari Government and Ghana’s Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. Mohammed Nurudeen, together with officials of the Ghana Embassy in Doha.

The Rt. Hon. Speaker is accompanied by a delegation that includes Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Sulemana Yussif; Hon. Lardi Ayamba; Sheikh Arimeyaw of the National Chief Imam’s Office; and officials from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Parliament of Ghana.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and is widely credited with modernizing the Gulf state and elevating its international profile. His state funeral has drawn dignitaries and heads of delegations from across the world.

Speaker Bagbin’s participation underscores Ghana’s longstanding diplomatic ties with the State of Qatar and the country’s respect for the late Emir’s legacy.


The delegation is expected to join other world leaders in paying final respects before returning to Ghana.
